Madras Parish History

The Madras Mar Thoma Syrian has the distinction of being the first parish of the Church outside Kerala. Established in the year 1936 with about 60 settlers from Kerala, it started as a student congregation under the clergy leadership of Rev. C K Mathai, followed by Rev. T K George and Rev. T P Mathew.

The congregation grew into a full fledged parish with the construction of the church under the leadership of the late Rev. A A Paylee, who was later the Vicar General of the Church. The Church was dedicated in July 1951 by the then Metropolitan, Most Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma.

Over a period of seven decades, the parish grew in size and spawned a number of parishes: Avadi, Thiruvottiyur, Tambaram, St. Thomas Mount, Anna Nagar, Padi and Adayar.

The mother parish at Chetpet still has over 650 families in its fold with over 3000 members and this does not include the floating student community. The parish is part of the Chennai-Bangalore Diocese with Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos as the Episcopa.

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations come to an end on January 16, 2011 in a grand Valedictory function which will be blessed by The Most. Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan and presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos, Bishop of The Chennai-Bangalore Diocese.
The Chief Guest will be Shri P Chidambaram, Hon’ble Union Minister for Home Affairs.
We welcome you to participate in this function and make it a grand success.
Even though the celebrations will come to an end on January 16, 2011, the work we have commenced will go on. And we request each one of you to earnestly contribute towards the success of the same as you have done whole-heartedly in the past.

We look forward to your presence on January 16 and your continued support and prayers.
